The Purl Stitch
When you have had a go at the knit stitch and feel ready to try the purl stitch get to the end of your row of knitting and swap your needles as you have been doing whenever you start a new row of knitting stitches.
Purl Stitch is basically the reverse of the knit stitch. When making a purl stitch you put your needle into the stitch from right to left, instead of left to right. You also hold your yarn to the front of your work instead of behind your work (as you do with knit stitch).
As before, we are going to show you the English style of purling which involves holding your yarn in your right hand.
Purl stitch in patterns is abbreviated to P, so P5 means purl the next five stitches.
To start a purl stitch hold the needle with the stitches on it in your left hand.
Hold the empty needle and your yarn in your right hand, to the front of your work.
Slide the end of the right hand needle into front of the first stitch on the needle from right to the left.
Wrap the yarn around the end of the right hand needle counterclockwise from around the back to the front.
Slide the end of the right hand needle and the wrapped yarn back through the stitch on the left hand needle, away from you. The right hand needle is now behind the left hand needle and contains a new stitch.
Now repeat each step for each stitch on the left end needle until that needle is empty and all the stitch are on the right hand needle.
